Oooh, vegan, gluten free convenience food!  Yay!  These are not pretty to look at, but they sit in my freezer waiting for me to mess up buying fresh food and then help me out.  Three minutes in the microwave and voila!  I find them quite tasty in an instituitional, stodgy food kind of way.  One of these and some salad makes an acceptable meal.  Amy’s Kitchen have made this Allergy Mum’s life easier.

Bonvita Hazelnut 71% Dark Chocolate

Ingredients – Cocoa mass, Raw cane sugar, Hazelnuts, Cocoa butter, Vanilla.  (At least 71% cocoa and less than 0.1% lactose).

If, like me, you like a bit of Dairy Milk Fruit and Nut or Dairy Milk Whole Nut, but it doesn’t like you, then this might be a good replacement.  The hazelnuts are chopped up so the small pieces are spread throughout the bar.  They give a nice, smooth, and, dare I say, milky flavour to the chocolate.

I have been on a bit of a DIY binge here at Allergy Towers (I blame my new Veganuary-induced higher energy levels).  I really needed something I could prepare quickly while I was in the middle of painting the kitchen.  Two minutes in the microwave seemed pretty quick, although there was the highly time consuming bit where you have to stop the microwave after 1 minute and flip the breakfast sandwich over before continuing to cook it.

Considering this is a gluten free, vegan ready meal is tastes pretty good.  The bun is a little chewy, but definitely not the worst gluten free bread I have ever eaten.  The scrambled tofu was quite crumbly.  I was sort of expecting it to taste like a McDonald’s McMuffin.  It didn’t.  It was much more pleasant and tastier.  Also, I didn’t feel a bit sick and sordid like I do after a McDonald’s meal!  It was smaller than I was expecting, but it was still quite filling.  I ate it with a cup of tea and that was sufficient to fuel some more hours of painting.

I would definitely buy this again.  It’s not the best meal I have ever eaten, but it fits my food needs, the box would take up hardly any space in the freezer, and it will be so convenient as my emergency food.

Real Nice Organic Banana & Raspberry Ice Lollies

Ingredients – Organic bananas, organic raspberries.  That’s it.

Bit of a confession, I only bought these because I needed to buy four frozen items from the Goodness Direct Website, but for the courier service you need a minimum of six items so I added the two cheapest frozen items to my order, and that was these lollies.  It did however make me feel like a super Mum, who can anticipate her children’s every wish, when a day or so later Allergy Big asked for a lolly on a stick, and I could instantly fulfil his wishes.

In a sense, these are an incredibly easy product that you could make at home; it’s just smooshed up banana and raspberry.  Like many simple things though to do it right is difficult.  The puree is very smooth and seed free.  It is also frozen without the gritty ice crystals you get in homemade ice lollies.  For the Allergy Brothers, who are so often food outsiders, the fact that it comes in a packet and looks like other people’s food is a big plus.

Unfortunately, for the Allergy Brothers, the uncompromisingly healthy nature of these lollies made them a bit too sharp.  Also, this was the flavour of Real Nice ice lollies that they are not allergic to, but it also includes a fruit that they are not that keen on, bananas (I know how can they not like bananas?, apparently it’s the smell they don’t like).  I enjoyed the leftovers very much.

Bonvita Bonbarr

Ingredients: Corn syrup, Dark chocolate (20%: raw cane sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, vanilla), Nougat (14%: raw cane sugar, hazlenuts, cocoa mass, cocoa butter), Corn powder, Tapioca flour, Palm fat, Lupin flour.

Lactose percentage less than 0.1%.  Produced in a factory that handles nuts.

If you have never eaten a Mars Bar, then a Bonbarr probably makes a nice change from a bar of plain dark chocolate.  If you have eaten a Mars Bar, then try not to think about it at all while eating this because, in comparison, the Bonbarr is Blandy McBland.  On the positive side, this is one of the few products that contain nougat, but don’t contain egg so that might make somebody’s day…

Tolerant Foods Red Lentil Rotini & Violife Prosociano

I have been a bit poorly (that will serve me right for crowing so much about how great I felt doing Veganuary!), but I have not neglected the blog entirely.  In fact, I have been continuing my search for the perfect Allergy Brothers friendly, easy, mid-week meal.  Last week we tried red lentil pasta and vegan parmesan.

Ingredients Tolerant Foods Red Lentil Rotini – Non-GMO, organic red lentils.  That’s it.

Ingredients Violife Prosociano – Water, Coconut oil (17%), Modified starch, Starch, Sea salt, Rice protein, Vegan parmesan flavour, Olive extract, Colour – b-carotene

I’ll start with reviewing the pasta.  The Allergy Brothers sniffed it and refused to try it.  I poo-pooed their fears , and tucked in.  “This is delicious,” I said.  And it was.  Just like normal pasta, but weirdly filling.  It was easily a meal with just some cheese shavings on.  And then, I had an allergic reaction to it.  The boys are so much better than I am at detecting which things will make us ill!  So if you are not allergic to this then I would recommend it.

The vegan parmesan was pretty good too.  It had a hard texture; this is especially impressive when you consider that vegan cheeses are often a bit soggy.  There was a strong flavour; the smell was too strong for the Allergy Brothers, but this wasn’t for them anyway.  It was really very convincing.  Now the negatives, it is pricey (we paid £4.90 for 235g), but then so is real parmesan.  I also didn’t like the vague ingredients.  What kind of starch?  Rice?  Potato?  What is vegan parmesan flavour?

So in summary, this would indeed be an easy, mid-week meal, but just not for the Allergy Brothers.
